Construction of PARC Campus is taking shape with the shell of the 164,000-square-foot building now complete. Royal BC Museum CEO, Tracey Drake, recently brought CHEK News to the site to showcase the progress and provide a sneak peek at what British Columbians can expect when the doors open in 2026.

Tracey was joined on the tour by Harold Reinders, CEO of Maple Reinders – the construction company delivering the project, and Kim Anderson, Executive Project Director at Transportation Investment Corporation, the organization responsible for project delivery on behalf of the Province of B.C. and the Royal BC Museum (RBCM).

Once opened, RBCM will operate as a two-campus institution – with major exhibitions and IMAX® Victoria theatre remaining in the downtown Victoria location, and the majority of the province’s collections, research and archives relocating to PARC Campus in the Royal Bay area of Colwood.

West Coast-inspired architectural elements integrated into the design of the new facility are beginning to emerge: BC sourced mass timber throughout (see April 2024 Blog for more detail); and colourful layers of rammed earth walls that are both aesthetic and structural (See September 2024 Blog for more detail).

The building’s thoughtful design and architectural features are what set it apart from functioning as a mere storage facility. PARC Campus will be a place where the public can engage with this important community asset. A central feature is a large public corridor that acts as a ‘spine’ bisecting the various uses, allowing visitors to observe museum staff conducting their research and preservation work through large glass panels. The expansive corridor will also feature displays from the province’s collection.

Indoor an outdoor event spaces will be available for public rental, making PARC Campus a community hub for special occasions.
